Meeting joey

Kangaroo Island 2/21/13

huge pelican in Kingscote
Today we went to an island named Kangaroo Island.  It was named that by the explorer who came to the island because all he saw everywhere were kangaroos.  The island is the same size as Ireland.  We took a shuttle bus to Kingscote, one of the biggest towns on the island.  We walked around and ate lunch at a pizza place.  Then we went to the beach and saw huge pelicans and black swans swimming in the water.

meeting a joey
After we got back to the port town, Penneshaw, we went on another shuttle to an art gallery.  They had lots of local art and 2 baby kangaroos- one boy and one girl.  They both lost their moms to car accidents.  The boy joey was named Santa because he had a white beard.  He smelled like curry.  The girl smelled like eucalyptus from the trees.  They still liked to be carried in a pillowcase because it feels like the mom’s pouch.  .  They were both the age they would be leaving the pouch.   They eat from a baby bottle.  The lady got their food from the vet.  They cannot drink cow’s milk.  We saw some kanagroos in the wild while we were driving back into Penneshaw.

Mom bought some honey and I bought a magnet with a picture of the penguins that live there in March.  The were not  there because they were out fishing in the ocean for a few   more weeks.
